In the article we discuss various approaches to the study of the compressed text, its place, role and functions in the modern expressive discourse. Compression as a new way of presenting information is gaining popularity, the main purpose of which is the storage and transmission of information with a minimum of resources. There are various types of compression: informative, semantic, compression at different language levels. The result of the process of compression is the creation of a special kind of text – compressed text. It is a well known fact that linguistic texts differ in amount of information, or the information saturation, that is, there are different ways of presenting information – economic and excessive, and hence the need for compressed texts. Today, the discourse researchers distinguish its various types. Modernlinguists in their classifications of discourse types anyway distinguish one of its features such as expressiveness, suggesting the existence of this type of discourse as expressive. The source of the expressiveness is, first and foremost, a literary text, in view of the fact that the creation of any message by the author in the literary work is always accompanied by a selection of certain linguistic means in order to ensure the aesthetic impact on the reader. In general, the article presents the views of linguists on the existing types of compression, the English-language text compression problem in the modern expressive discourse, as well as the peculiarities of the English-language compressed text in expressive discourse.
