Abstract

The article considers the general problem of English translation of a text saturated with Ukrainian realities. Many detailed and short linguistic and translation studies (S. Vlahov and S. Florin, R. Zorivchak, V. Krupnov, O. Reformatsky, V. Repin, A. Suprun, V. Uvarov etc) dealt with the problem of studying realia and reproducing them in translation. In the process of translation it is common to combine two cultural contexts or overlapping of one context to another. The most difficult are those fragments of the original that are rich in national and cultural information. The purpose of our research is to analyze the means of translating Ukrainian culturally marked vocabulary into English using the strategy of domestication or foreignization. The theoretical basis of these two strategies was created by Lawrence Venutti. The material of the research is Nikolai Gogol's "Viy" (although written in Russian, but rich in Ukrainian national and cultural information) and its English translation by Claude Field, Isabel Hapgood and G. Tolstoy. Literary translation is almost an entirely new work, because the translator is willing to choose between two translation strategies that are completely opposite and have different goals. In the translation versions, English translators used domestication of most everyday realities, except the most famous ones, such as vodka, as well as addressing, while foreignizing personal names and some details of everyday life. We consider the stylistic load translation analysis to be the prospects of further investigation.
