Abstract

The article is devoted to the anti-war poems by the brightest representative of English “trench” poets Siegfried Sassoon. The innovation features characteristic of his poetry are under consideration. Siegfried Sassoon was one of the first poets to introduce colloquialisms and jargonisms, which was not peculiar to the poetry in general and to the Georgian poetry in particular. Such innovations as pauses in the middle of the line, not stable and abrupt division of words helped Sassoon express his attitude to war as political cruel slaughter. The main images of the poem “They” are under analysis. Siegfried Sassoon`s innovation lies in the fact that his poems are full of horrifying truth about war, of human suffering. Uncovered realism of his anti-war poems greatly influenced the development of English modernistic poetry.
