The article deals with the definitions of the notion “concept” and its main characteristics. The notion “concept” is given consideration to as a linguocultural term. The main theories of concept structure widely spread in current cognitive science are described in the article. On the basis of the analysis of the entries of the most significant editions of contemporary English language dictionaries it has been found out that the concept “Italy” has a complex and a multilayer structure. The results of the research show that the concept “Italy” is a linguocultural concept which includes a whole range of characteristics and associations that persist in English native speakers’ consciousness. In the process of studying the subject matter given it has been established that the notion “concept” in terms of linguoculturology includes the components which are important and integral constituents of cultural heritage of the mankind and demands further study. It has been stated that the concept “Italy” relates to significant elements of the English language and has a huge variety of definitions, creating versatility of the concept.The analysis of the theoretical sources, devoted to the study of the most popular theories in the current cognitive research, gives the possibility to make an attempt to create the model of the structure of the linguocultural concept “Italy” according to the field-principle and on the basis of frequency and order of definitions of the concept in dictionaries of contemporary English. The nuclear of the concept is the most perceivable and concrete element of the definition – representation of the territory, close periphery – representation of organization and population, remote periphery – representation of cultural and spiritual value. The structure received as a result corresponds to the three-component model of theconcept, consisting of the perceivable image, informational content and interpretational field, which is being actively studied by current cognitive science.
