Abstract

The article considers key characteristics of lexical units denoting colours through the prism of contemporary linguistic vision, and offers the results of red colour key functions study. The red colour is researched as one of the expressive means in poetry of Richard Aldington. The author of the article grounds the study on the scientific fact, that bulk of coloratives, consisting of main and peripheral ones, has evolutionary character and develops together with the culture. When it reads about the connotative component forming in the semantic structure of coloratives, the first feature to appear is colour symbolism. On forming, this new colour symbol is preserved in the language and gives rise to new senses.Indirect meanings of colours appear as a result of secondary nomination. They are highly dependent on contexts as well as stylistically marked. The new meanings of colours are stable notwithstanding the dynamic character of the context. Besides that, they dominate over different meanings. Emotionally stressed coloratives are highly productive in poetry, thus they are extensively analyzed from the point of view of types and shades, which can vary even in the comprehension of one and the same individual. Richard Aldington is a well-known writer and literary critic. In the beginning of his career he joined a limited by members, however highly artistically active group of imagists. The movement of imagism provided the English literature with the push to a new level – poets experimented with form, rhythm, colour and verse libre. To add, the poetry of imagism collected its own palette of colours, which is vivid in Richard Aldington’ s poems. While researching it was stated that Richard Aldington’ coloratives are individual features of certain subjects, as well as characteristics of inner functional abilities.
