GILLIAN ALLNUTT'S LYRICS IN POETOLOGICAL DIMENSION

  • Liliya Teterina

Abstract

The article concerns a poetological aspect of Jillian Allnutt's lyrics. Being one of the characteristic features of the contemporary poetry, poetological reflexivity is understood here as foregrounding in poetry author's contemplations dealing with the creative process, including such philological aspects as aesthetic criteria, normative cannons, relationship with the art of predecessors, investigation of language poetic means and others. We mainly analyzed those poems by Allnutt which are concerned with the subject of poetry creation. Sometimes author's rhetorical reflections are expressed explicitly, as, for instance, in the poem "Held to", but more often they are incorporated into the structure of the text in the form of metaphor as in the poem "Scheherazade". Author's "philological" reflections are also revealed in investigating the relationshipbetween oral and written forms of speech, poetic and prosaic discourses, different regional varieties and speech registers of the English language. Understanding of boundaries between them and their violation is one of the most productive resources for enrichment of the poetic language. Jillian Allnutt's poetry is also a bright sample of idiosyncratic synthesis of the traditional and literary poetry: she often derives her characters, situations, episodes from literary sources and the Bible, while the form of her poems (rhythm, rhyme, sound effects) is associated with oral poetic tradition making her lyric voice unique.
