VIDEOCLIPS CLASSIFICATION AND USAGE IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

Contemporary trends in the rapid growth of the number of video materials filmed in any place of our planet and posted on the Internet, have contributed to study of the history of video materials implementation in teaching English. On the basis of the analysis carried out in the article the idea of facilitating studying by using both specially designed videos and video clips taken by students themselves in teaching English as a foreign language is proposed. The main ways of the students’ videos introduction in English language classroom are described. The author’s classification of video clips is given according to the criteria of purpose, subject, genre, forms of class organization. It is emphasized that both linguistic and non-linguistic specialties students can create video clips at different stages of studying a foreign language. The main stages onvideo clips creation and their presentation are described and analysed. Possibility of using students’ video clips to form and develop the key competencies required by a European specialist upon completion of studies in universities, in particular, communicative in native and foreign languages and socio-cultural. It was emphasized that the use of the necessary technical equipment and software in the preparation and filmingof videos will encourage students to master the basic skills of technological or digital competence. It is revealed that the necessity to search actual material and write text for the video and its presentation can ensure the formation of public and civil competences. It is found that the limited time for project fulfilment and obligation to work within the group might develop students’ ability to learn, find innovative solutions, accept responsibility and make common decisions on complicated tasks.
